Here at Atholl Glens, we have always been proud of the stockmanship of our farmers and the traceability of our meat, from farm to plate. Now for the first time, visitors to Atholl Estates can experience this for themselves on one of two new farm tours offered by the Atholl Glens' farmers.
Alexander Brewster is one of Atholl Glens' youngest and most driven members, always looking for ways to expand and improve his business and that of Atholl Glens.
At Rotmell, just north of Dunkeld, he offers personalised tours for individuals or small groups, tailored to his visitors' requirements.
Rotmell is home to 1000 Scottish Blackface ewes, grazing 2000 acres of heather hills, whilst 100 head of Aberdeen Angus cattle graze the pastures around the farmyard.
Alexander's latest venture is free range egg production, and two large chicken sheds are in place, spilling forth chickens which roam the fields during the day. The chickens are very friendly and inquisitive, and are more than happy to follow you around on your tour!
Alexander is keen to make Rotmell Farm Tours what you, the visitor, want them to be. If you have a particular interest in beef, lamb or mutton, or indeed eggs, then the tour can be tailored around that. Alternatively, if you would like a more in-depth insight into the workings of an organic farm, that can be provided. Perhaps you just fancy a walk round a farm in a beautiful setting, with fantastic views, in the company of the farmer who knows the place best - Alexander will be more than happy to oblige.
If you wish to book a Rotmell Farm Tour, or to chat to Alexander about any specific requirements, please contact Hannah at the Atholl Estates Office, on 01796 481355, who will then ask Alexander to contact you when he is in his office with his diary to hand.
Managed in-hand by Atholl Estates as the Home Farm to Blair Castle, Balanloan extends to over 800 acres of fields. Beyond the fields is the Forest of Atholl moorland which is grazed by sheep and cattle in the summer.
The farm carries 150 suckler cows and 1500 breeding sheep looked after by the farm manager, Fraser MacLauchlan.
Farm tours at Balanloan are by tractor and trailer, and the tractor driver will explain all about the farm's organic status and how this affects the farming methods used.
Balanloan Farm Tours last 90 minutes, and take place on selected Saturdays from March-May, then every Monday, Thursday and Friday from 30th June to 20th August. Click here for more information.
