Atholl Glens is delighted to be able to offer organic chicken for the first time, in partnership with Highland Organics.
Happy, healthy and truly delicious chickens
The chicken we sell is organic and free-range, and is certified by the Soil Association. The chickens are naturally reared in the Scottish Highlands, where they have unrestricted access to the outdoors and are free to roam in daylight hours.
All the chickens are a specially selected, slow-growing breed, the Wallace RedTM, which is ideally suited to a free-range, outdoor lifestyle. Fed a natural and strictly organic diet, they produce a tasty, succulent meat that is full of flavour. Click here to buy yours today!
Why eat organic chicken?
Organic, free-range chicken is the happiest, healthiest chicken you can buy.
Happy Chicken: Organic, free-range birds have unrestricted access to the outdoors and room to move and behave as chickens like to behave - they dust-bathe, scratch and wander around. Their intensively-reared compatriots, squashed in their tens of thousands into broiler houses, have no room to move around and do not see natural light (except maybe through a window). They are fattened so quickly their legs often collapse under the weight, and are routinely fed antibiotics to ward off disease caused by their living conditions.
Healthy Chicken: Chicken is low fat and has a low calorie content. Organically produced, free-range chickens contain less saturated fat than intensively-reared chickens, as they get plenty of exercise during their everyday lives. Intensively-reared chickens are much fattier, because they cannot move about, and are therefore more likely to increase cholesterol levels. Eating organic, free-range chicken means you needn't feel so guilty about leaving the delicious roast chicken skin on - although it still contains fat, it's a lot healthier than the skin of an intensively-reared chicken and it's far tastier too!
Organic chicken is also rich in protein (good for muscles and the immune system), zinc (for warding off colds), B vitamins (boost the metabolism and the immune system) and selenium (an antioxidant that may help reduce the incidence of certain cancers and heart disease).
About Highland Organics
Highland Organics was chosen as the ideal supplier of our organic chickens for two reasons. Firstly, they work to stringent Soil Association organic standards, ensuring extremely high welfare standards on their farms.
Secondly, they are very much on the same wavelength as Atholl Glens, being a similar co-operative of like-minded farmers with small, family-run farms, working together.
Highland Organics' principles are the same as those of Atholl Glens - the farmers care about quality produce and about taking care of the environment. We asked the team at Highland Organics to explain a little more about their farming policies and the way their chickens are produced:
"Highland Organics aim for truly sustainable agriculture. Our systems actively encourage a diverse and healthy environment in which birds, insects and animals thrive and nature is in balance. The result is simple, pure natural chicken full of traditional flavour and all produced without synthetic pesticides, fungicides and artificial fertilisers. You can recognise a Highland Organics chicken by it's distinctive taste and juicy texture - a standard that's hard to beat."
